THE BIG IDEA
Openness or Overstep?
I stumbled upon this interesting story about Matthew Baltzell, CEO of Cap X Media, and his recent LinkedIn post concerning his approach to firing an employee.
In his post, Baltzell shared how he had a 10-minute meeting with the employee to break the termination news, he offered them a severance package equivalent to one week's pay per year of service and assured them of a future job reference.
He shared the experience publicly to show he values honesty and wants to keep a positive company culture, even when making tough decisions.
Maybe it was because Baltzell uploaded the post alongside a smiling photo of himself, but it sparked mixed reactions.
On one hand, being honest about difficult decisions can make employees trust and respect you more. But, sharing the details of someone getting fired, with a smiling photo, seems insensitive.
Baltzell is a good reminder to you about the responsibilities you carry and how your actions can shape both your company's culture and how people perceive you.
How do you think Baltzell could have handled this situation differently?
